About Khajjiar

Framed by the foothills of the Dhauladhar range, Khajjiar Himachal Pradesh has earned its title as the “Mini Switzerland of India”, and not without reason. There’s a softness to this place that unfolds slowly: rolling meadows surrounded by dense deodar and pine forests, a gentle mountain stillness, and distant snow-capped peaks in the backdrop. At the heart of this place lies the small, serene Khajjiar Lake, its still waters reflecting the surrounding greenery like a living painting. Located a short drive from Dalhousie and Chamba, it often finds its way into a well-connected Himachal itinerary. Beyond its scenic charm, Khajjiar offers layers to explore, from the quiet presence of Khajji Naga Temple to the forested trails of Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary and the expansive views from Dainkund Peak. These experiences flow naturally into glimpses of Himachali culture, where local markets offer handwoven woollens, Tibetan handicrafts, and small keepsakes that carry a trace of the mountains with them.

Places to Visit in Khajjiar Himachal Pradesh

  • Khajjiar Lake: At the heart of Khajjiar, this lake is surrounded by open meadows and forested edges that give it a calm, expansive feel. On a clear, sunny day, the view from here stretches far enough to catch a glimpse of Mount Kailash in the distance. The meadows around it bring a burst of energy, with zorbing, paragliding, and horse riding adding an adventurous touch to the experience.
  • Khajji Naga Temple: Dedicated to the serpent deity, this ancient temple blends traditional Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, with intricately carved wooden pillars and ceilings depicting scenes from Hindu epics. Located close to Khajjiar Lake, the temple’s golden dome and spire stand out, while its quiet halls and shrines add to its layered, spiritual character.
  • Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary: This sanctuary is a dense stretch of deodar and fir forests, known for its rich flora and fauna. Located close to Khajjiar Himachal Pradesh, and just 6 km from Dalhousie, it makes for an easy escape into the wild. The trek from Dalhousie to the sanctuary is one of the most scenic ways to take it all in, while jungle safaris and hikes add a more adventurous edge to the experience.
  • Daikund Peak: Dainkund, also called the Singing Hill, is a treat for both adventurers and peace-seekers, offering trekking trails with stunning views of Khajjiar Lake and nearby villages dotted with charming mud houses. The area is sprinkled with colourful flower valleys, and along the way, a visit to Pholani Devi Temple adds a touch of local culture.
  • Panchpula: Panchpula is a vibrant spot, famous for its impressive waterfalls, especially during monsoons and summers. It’s also the starting point for scenic treks to Dalhousie and nearby destinations. The area features the memorial of revolutionary Sardar Ajit Singh, and with refreshing streams, waterfalls, and picnic spots, Panchpula makes for a perfect day out with family and friends.
  • Local Markets: While you’re in Khajjiar Himachal Pradesh, shopping is an easy add-on, with plenty of options to pick up local handicrafts and souvenirs. From the Tibetan Handicrafts Centre and Gandhi Chowk Bazaar to the Himachal Emporium, Kala Top Handicraft Centre, and Village Co-operative Society, there’s plenty to explore.
